Flight Sergeant Douglas Walter Westlake Bull, an Australian aged 21, served with No 56 Operational Training Unit, by the date of his death (27 April 1943) primarily based at Tealing.

As detailed in the following letters, his aircraft was involved in a collision with another aircraft while on a training mission. The aircraft crashed in the Montrose basin on the east coast of Scotland. Although parts of his Hawker Hurricane I were found, his body was never recovered.

His details can be found on the Australian War Memorial website here.

The Hurricane (serial number P2754) was by the time of the accident relatively elderly, something far from uncommon, and served with No 17 Squadron at Debden during the Battle of Britain.
