At the end of 1914 the RNAS created an airfield by the town for fighters to use on defensive sorties. By the spring of 1916, Burnham-on-Crouch was being taken up by the RFC, various fighter types of No 37 Squadron then having this site available to them as a Home Defence landing ground. The unit eventually switched to solely using Sopwith Camels in October 1918, these aircraft remaining in service after the end of fighting.
