Late on in World War One Bristol F2bs of No 39 Squadron had Stanstead available to them as a Home Defence landing ground. These aircraft remained in service until the squadron moved to Belgium a few days before the end of fighting in November 1918, while the airfield continued to be open for Home Defence duties into the early months of 1919.
